Metadata describes the condition of a shot and contains a lot of information about the photo. Taking the correct approach to metadata is the key to success with photo management and organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rule of thumb for metadata is: \u201cThe more, the better.\u201d The more\nmetadata you have, the more metadata you create, and the better the photo\nlibrary becomes. Use descriptions and keywords to describe Events, Albums, and\nphotos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phototheca works intensively with metadata. In order to help you understand\nhow, first you need to understand what metadata is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire set of metadata you have with all your photos can be divided\ninto two parts: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Read-only metadata<\/li><li>User-edited metadata<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2>Read-only metadata<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"301\" height=\"714\" src=\"https:\/\/lunarship.com\/manual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06_Organize_06_Metadata_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-917\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lunarship.com\/manual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06_Organize_06_Metadata_01.jpg 301w, https:\/\/lunarship.com\/manual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06_Organize_06_Metadata_01-126x300.jpg 126w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">This is what is called EXIF metadata. This metadata is generated by a\ncamera and is written into each JPEG or RAW file directly, at the moment the\nfile is generated inside the camera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EXIF metadata contains a huge amount of useful details about the conditions\nof a shot and the camera, for instance: light conditions, aperture and focus,\nshutter speed, ISO number, location of the camera, altitude (height above sea\nlevel), direction, camera model, lens model, color space, etc. It\u2019s difficult\nto overestimate the value of this data.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Phototheca completely supports all standard EXIF data of JPEG and RAW files. They are the XMP and\nIPTC sections of the JPEG file. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phototheca supports read-from and write-to the XMP and IPTC portions of\nmetadata. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>XMP and IPTC metadata is used to add descriptive information to an image,\nfor instance: description, keywords, author, rating, copyright, address, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phototheca reads and supports modification of the following XMP\/IPTC\nfields:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Description<\/li><li>Keywords<\/li><li>Rating<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2>View metadata. This section shows basic information about the photo: camera model, lens model, dimensions, file size, format (JPEG\/RAW\/HEIC), and shooting conditions (ISO, focal length, exposure, aperture, and shutter speed). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B \u2013 Filename<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C \u2013 Timestamp of the photo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D \u2013 Description of the photo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>E \u2013 Rating of the photo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F \u2013 Keywords of the photo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>G \u2013 EXIF metadata of the photo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2>Description of the photo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the IPTC and XMP metadata have a description field that contains\noptional text that describes a photo. Phototheca shows this description in the Info\nPanel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To add a description to a photo or modify an existing description, click with the mouse on this field and it becomes editable. When a description is typed in, click outside the field and it is saved and written into the JPEG file. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lunarship.com\/manual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06_Organize_06_Metadata_05.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-925\" width=\"318\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lunarship.com\/manual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06_Organize_06_Metadata_05.jpg 318w, https:\/\/lunarship.com\/manual\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/06_Organize_06_Metadata_05-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Phototheca has the ability to provide photo descriptions to Events and\nAlbums as well, even though there is no file on disk to write a description into.\nFor Events and Albums, Phototheca keeps descriptions inside its own database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Descriptions are important from an organizational point of view, so it makes sense to create them as much as possible. Phototheca can perform a search through descriptions by a single word, and it is a convenient way to quickly find a photo or an event if you recall only one word of it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Metadata\nof RAW files<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>RAW files have metadata as well, although it is not as well-structured as JPEG metadata. Phototheca can read and show RAW metadata as much as Windows can. Usually, the more recent version of Windows 10 you have, the better RAW metadata support is available.
